Estádio do Maracană
Estádio do Maracană, also known as Estádio Jornalista Mário Filho, is one of
the largest football stadiums in the world. Owned by the Rio de Janeiro
State Government, it is named after the Maracană neighborhood in Rio de
Janeiro. It is used by CR Flamengo and Fluminense FC as the main home ground.
The stadium was opened in 1950 to host the FIFA World Cup. Although the paid
attendance at the deciding game between Brazil and Uruguay of the 1950 FIFA
World Cup was 199 000, the stadium currently has a lower capacity of 95 000 for safety reasons. In 1969, Brazilian football star Pelé scored his 1000th goal of his career at the stadium against CR Vasco da Gama, in front of 125 000 spectators. It has
also hosted a number of concerts and other sporting events.
