Estádio Vila Belmiro
Estádio Vila Belmiro, the major football stadium in Santos, inaugurated in October 1916. It has a capacity of 20 000 people. Santos FC, the most popular sports club from the city, owns the stadium. For many years Estádio Vila Belmiro became Pelé's most important place where he demonstrated his skills. In 1964 Pelé scored eight goals, when Santos FC beat the opposing squad 11-0. In the same year, part of the stadium bleachers collapsed, resulting in 181 injured spectators. The attendance record stands at 32 000, set in September 1964, when Santos FC and SC Corinthians Paulista drew 0-0.
