Estadio Nacional de Chile

Estadio Nacional de Chile is the national stadium of Chile. It is located in Santiago. It is the largest stadium in Chile with a capacity of 77 000, and is part of a large sporting complex which also features tennis courts, swimming pools, and a modern gymnasium. Construction began in February 1937 and the stadium was inaugurated in December 1938. The architecture was based on the Olympiastadion Berlin in Germany. The stadium became infamous after its use for internment of opponents by the military regime following the 1973 Chilean coup d'état. It is used mostly for football matches and was one of the four venues of the 1962 FIFA World Cup. It was the scene of the greatest accomplishment of the national football team of Chile: The 1-0 victory over Yugoslavia for the third place in June 1962. Estadio Nacional de Chile is the home of CF Universidad de Chile, one of the major football clubs in the country.
