Stamford Bridge
Stamford Bridge is a football stadium on the border of Fulham and Chelsea in
London. It is the home of Chelsea FC, one of the richest football clubs in
the world since Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich owns the club. The
stadium is nicknamed The Bridge by Chelsea FC supporters. Stamford Bridge is
the place where King Harold Godwinson defeated the Vikings in 1066 in the
Battle of Stamford Bridge, shortly before his defeat by the Normans at the
Battle of Hastings. Stamford Bridge opened in 1877 and it was initially
offered to Fulham FC, but they turned it down. They considered selling the
land to the Great Western Railway Company, but ultimately decided to found
their own football club, Chelsea FC, to occupy the ground. Stamford Bridge
had an official capacity of around 100 000 before it became an all-seater.
