Kashima Stadium
Kashima Stadium is a football stadium in the city of Kashima, in the Ibaraki Prefecture. It is the home stadium of Kashima Antlers, a traditionally strong team in Japan's top football division. Antlers is derived from the city name, Kashima, which literally means Deer Island.The stadium's capacity is 40 000. It opened in May 1993 and in 2001 the stadium was expanded to be ready as a venue for the 2002 FIFA World Cup held in Japan and South Korea. Kashima Stadium hosted three matches in the 2002 FIFA World Cup: Argentina versus Nigeria, Germany versus Republic of Ireland, and Italy versus Croatia.
