Hongkou Stadium

The Hongkou Stadium is a stadium in Shanghai, located in the Hongkou District. The stadium has a capacity of 35 000 people. It is currently used mostly for football matches. It was re-built in 1999 over the previous Hongkou Stadium. Shanghai Shenhua is the main tenant of the stadium. The club was founded in December 1993 and was first sponsored by a local company named Shenhua. Shenhua also means flower of Shanghai in Chinese. At the end of 2001, Shenhua ended their sponsorship of the club. The team however is unique as it still retains Shenhua in its name while many other teams drop the name of their former sponsors completely. They signed the German striker Carsten Jancker for the 2006 season. In 2001 he won the UEFA Champions League with FC Bayern München.
