Stade Léopold Sédar Senghor
Stade Léopold Sédar Senghor is a stadium in Dakar. It is currently used mostly for football matches and it also has an athletics track. It serves as a home ground of ASC Jeanne d'Arc and AS Douanes. The stadium holds 60 000, making it one of the larger stadiums in Africa. It was built in 1985. The stadium is named after Léopold Sédar Senghor, a Senegalese poet, politician, and cultural theorist who served as the first president of Senegal between 1960 and 1980. He was the first African to sit as a member of the Académie Française. Senghor was also the founder of the political party called the Senegalese Democratic Bloc. He is regarded by many as one of the most important African intellectuals of the 20th century.
