Loftus Versfeld Stadium
The Loftus Versfeld Stadium is a sports stadium situated in Pretoria. The
multi-use stadium has a capacity of 51 000 and is an all-seater venue. The
stadium was named after the founder of organised sports in Pretoria. Through
the years the stadium has undergone various name changes as sponsors came
and went, though locals have always referred to the stadium as Loftus
Versfeld Stadium. The site of the stadium was first used for sports in 1906,
and the field was simply called the Eastern Sports Ground. The first
concrete structure was erected there by the City Council in 1923. The Loftus
Versfeld Stadium is home to two football clubs: Mamelodi Sundowns and
Supersport United. It is also used for rugby matches. Mamelodi Sundowns is one of the most successful football teams in South Africa. Other successful clubs are Kaizer Chiefs FC and former African champions Orlando Pirates FC. They played against Manchester United FC at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in front of capacity crowds.
