Newlands Stadium

The Newlands Stadium is located in Cape Town and is not far away from the Newlands Cricket Ground. It currently has a capacity of 51 000 people, making it one of the largest stadiums in the country. Various sports clubs currently use the stadium as their home base. Those clubs are Ajax Cape Town FC, also known as the Urban Warriors, and two rugby union clubs. The decision to buy the ground the stadium stands on was made by the Western Province rugby union club in 1888. The first official match at Newlands Stadium took place in May 1890. It wasn't until 1919 that the first permanent concrete stands were erected on the grounds. Later, in 1927, the new grandstand was erected. Between 1990 and 1995 the stadium was under constant renovation. Ajax Cape Town FC work together with Dutch football giants AFC Ajax. In 2006 they bought goalkeeper Hans Vonk from AFC Ajax. Steven Pienaar moved from Ajax Cape Town FC to the Dutch side.
